Lyons Press, an imprint of Globe Pequot Press, is proud to announce the release of PORTRAITS OF THE AMERICAN CRAFTSMAN, by Tadd Myers (November 12, 2013, 978-0-7627-9003-6; $29.95 hardcover; full-color throughout), a stunning collection of full-color portraits that celebrate American craftsmen and the products they make in small workshops all over the country, with lyrical descriptions of what they make, who they are, and the tradition embedded in their trade.
Award-winning photographer Tadd Myers is five years into a cross-country journey to capture images of the American craftsman engaged in his work. At a time when the public is growing disenchanted by the disposable items that litter the American landscape, the workers in Tadd’s portraits are still using human eyes to guide human hands; the objects they make carry the souls of their makers. His beautifully rendered photographs and profiles celebrate the thriving American culture of true craftsmanship, which is alive and well in all parts of the country: from pipe-makers in Tennessee to the Steinway factory in Queens, NY; from a carousel workshop in Ohio to guitar makers in Texas; from hatmakers in Chicago to boatbuilders in Vermont.
The book project began as a commercial assignment to photograph Texas craftsmen carving various wooden moldings for an historic building. While working on the project, Tadd began to wonder how many other craftsmen in America were working with their hands. “What started as a personal curiosity soon grew into something that feels much more important—an opportunity to record and preserve this aspect of American culture and tell the story of these remarkable people.”
Tadd Myers is an award-winning photographer who specializes in advertising, corporate, and editorial projects around the world. Tadd’s extensive client list includes advertising agencies such as The Richards Group, Arnold World Wide, TM Advertising, Young & Rubicam, and companies such as MD Anderson, Dr. Pepper, American Airlines, and Sears Craftsman among many others.
Tadd discovered photography through his father’s printing company in Houston, Texas, where at an early age he began operating a printing press and working in the darkroom. His passion for photography led him to Texas A&M University-Commerce, where he earned a BA in Photography with a minor in Computer Science. This combination of artistry and inquisitiveness is what drives Tadd to always look beyond what is in front of his camera lens, and makes the images he creates so alive with emotion and the feeling there’s a story you want to hear behind each moment captured.
